The Hate U Give is a film adaptation of the novel of the same name. The movie follows the subsequent events after Starr Carter (Amandla Stenberg), a 16-year-old black American girl, witnesses her childhood friend, Khalil (Algee Smith), getting unjustly shot by the police with no prior warrant simply because he was black and they had felt threatened by him. Her family asks her not to testify against the cop who had shot her friend as they’re afraid of the unannounced consequences that may or may not follow.

Simultaneously, the media tries to brush off the incident as logical and justified to protect law enforcement. The movie is socially relevant even after two years of its release, showing that the unequivocal racial discrimination black people still face and the hostile stereotypes pitted against them are still very much prevalent. This movie makes one think deeply, reflect on their actions, and bring justified violence against black people to come to light.

The Pursuit of Happyness


A Will Smith classic, The Pursuit of Happyness is a 2006 biographical drama film based on the book written by Chris Gardner. It is an honest portrayal of a perseverant homeless man and his compelling desire to succeed in life. A real success story of businessman Gardner himself, who is now worth millions, is an immense inspiration to today’s aspiring youth. It serves as motivation to continually strive towards one’s goal and staying determined throughout.
